BMW Recalls 2008 to 2011 1-Series

Published by oneal7731 | Filed under Autos

BMW has issued a recall for all 1-Series Model Year 2008 to 2011, over a faulty part in front seatbelts, which in case of a severe crash may even start a fire! They have even stopped selling the car until the problem is addressed on all affected cars. Apparently it’s the deployment of the belt’s pretensioners, which in a crash of sufficient severity may ignite the insulation around them.

NHTSA did not report how many vehicles are affected, and said BMW has not yet stated how it will remedy the issue. Consumer Reports says BMW dealers have been instructed to hold delivery on the vehicles.

BMW  has not yet released a fix for the issue, but has notified NHTSA of the recall and halted sales of all 1 Series models until it rectifies the design issue. BMW will notify owners of the recall shortly and provide updated information to NHTSA when it has a fix.

MW has now produced a million X5 luxury 4x4s at its US plant in Spartanburg in South Carolina.

Since opening its one and only U.S. factory in 1994, BMW has produced several well-known models at the plant, such as the 318i and its M, Z3 and Z4 roadsters. But company officials said the X5, which was launched in September 1999, has laid the cornerstone for BMW to become the most successful premium vehicle manufacturer in the global SUV market.

BMW is the first European auto-manufacturer that started production in the U.S. in 1994 and now its cars are exported all over the world.

BMW said the X5 has won numerous awards for design, quality and safety, including a crash test safety award from Insurance Institute for Highway Safety in 2000, a gold award in the J.D. Power North American customer satisfaction study in 2007 and the IIHS’s top safety pick award in 2008.
USA Today reports that BMW’s plant has become an integral part of the South Carolinian economy, accounting for over 1% of the state’s total GDP, according to a University of South Carolina study. When accounting for suppliers, the factory adds 23,000 jobs to South Carolina’s economy and generates over $1 billion in wages annually.

Recently another $750 million was invested to upgrade the factory and get it ready to produce the next-generation BMW X3.
